Challenge

As RH expanded its Design Gallery concept, the project required a destination that could seamlessly combine retail, hospitality, and professional design services within a single environment. The building needed to express the brand’s elevated design ethos while creating an immersive experience for guests.

Solution

Our design introduces a transparent contemporary structure wrapped in an artisanal brick façade crafted from hand-selected Italian bricks. Gallery-style installations, dedicated interior design studios, and a rooftop restaurant beneath a soaring glass-and-steel atrium, anchored by an exposition kitchen and wine bar clad in Taj Mahal stone, create a layered experience that integrates product displays, design services, and hospitality within a single destination.

Outcome

Located in Birmingham’s highly walkable downtown, the Gallery established the prototype for RH’s Design Gallery concept and set a new benchmark for experiential retail. By merging home furnishings, design consultation, and hospitality, it has become a destination for design and lifestyle inspiration.

RH (NYSE: RH) is a curator of design, taste, and style in the luxury lifestyle market, offering timeless home furnishings collections through a retail omnichannel strategy that includes architecturally inspiring Design Galleries. These immersive Galleries elegantly integrate exclusive products, professional design services and hospitality experiences. The Company continues to expand its transformative Gallery concept across major urban and suburban markets in North America and Europe.

RH Detroit, The Gallery in Birmingham is RH’s first Design Gallery, located at 300 S Old Woodward Ave. Spanning four levels and 60,000 square feet, the Gallery blurs the lines between residential and retail, indoors and outdoors, home and hospitality.

Conceptualized as a transparent contemporary structure filled with fresh air and natural light, the Gallery features an artisanal brick facade in a custom parchment-cream palette, crafted of hand-selected Italian bricks.

Guests are immersed in artistic installations of furniture, antiques, artifacts, and art in a gallery setting. Along the periphery, a classical arrangement of rooms presents RH Interiors, an homage to refined designs across the ages, and RH Modern, a tribute to 20th-century modernism comprising visionary pieces from industry icons.

The RH Interior Design Studio on the third level includes interactive workspace with private client presentation rooms, state-of-the-art technology, and comprehensive design libraries showcasing the brand’s vast assortment of textiles, furniture, and lighting finishes.

Under a soaring glass and steel atrium, the Rooftop Restaurant is defined by a striking exposition kitchen and wine bar, both clad in natural Taj Mahal stone. The year-round skylit garden escape features sparkling chandeliers, heritage olive trees, and a trickling center fountain.

The restaurant opens onto a beautifully landscaped rooftop, framing sweeping views of downtown Birmingham. The destination encompasses a series of intimate RH Outdoor lounge spaces featuring pleached London plane trees, shade canopies, sculptural evergreens, and French limestone fire tables.

Located in Birmingham’s highly walkable, upscale downtown, the Gallery benefits from strong foot traffic and visibility, establishing itself as a retail and hospitality destination for design and lifestyle inspiration.
